„I turned my back to football for many decades,“ says Darren Eadiesaid „It wasn’t because I did not like the game. This was because I loved it so much and that I could not do it anymore. Imagine your passion – anything you wake up for – and being told you can not do it. Being told it’s OK as it is still possible to watch your mates get it done. It is so tricky.“
Retirement comes to each footballer but the ending for Eadie came than he could ever have envisioned.
He had been a winger, including to allow those in Europe while still a teenager. When he became the undercover member of this club’s hall of fame, he was playing. But knee injuries mared his movement into Leicester. At 28, his career was over.
„It was the shock than anything,“ he tells Sky Sports. „I’d had injuries to my knee before and always come back from it so I always believed I would come back from the subsequent one. So to awaken from an operation and now have my wife sat there along with the physio sat there as well as also the surgeon sat there telling me my livelihood was performed at 28 was a large shock.“
251 looks had been created by eadie with 81 of those. He had been tipped for stardom but he had been expecting a long career before him, even if his injuries had promised those peaks were not likely to be reached. Retirement was not the program.
The plan had to change.
„It’s like being thrown out of a fish tank and suddenly you are flailing around on the floor not knowing what to do. It’s a different environment. That was the issue for me. It wasn’t just that I had been out of football. It was that I was learning how to fit into society again because it’s extremely different to being in a football changing room.
„You have this sort of resilience to you as a footballer. You then tell yourself that there is another game round the corner When you’ve got a match that is poor and you will have the chance to put it behind you. That is the way I tried to handle this. I only went to put it and try to enjoy my retirement. But this quickly fades.
„It calls for different life skills and you have to understand that fairly fast. I think putting it on the back-burner, in hindsight, was probably the oddest thing I’ve ever done. I must have spoken to people straight away. But I bottled everything up, put away it, covered it up and attempted to put a brave face. After a while, which takes its toll“
Eadie suffered from depression.
There were also tears. Panic strikes. Sometimes he couldn’t leave the home. Other times he had to call his wife to come back and get him.
„It was a gradual process,“ he explains. „In soccer, you will need a bit of stress to perform with. You require nervous tension. However, that was a lot. I made excuses not to find people. I had been making excuses not to go out. That is when you realise you are getting darker and deeper.
„There was a stage when I hit rock bottom and my spouse was fantastic at that moment. She had been having to manage a child . I had been someone who was needy. You end up hanging on their every word. All it would take is one’wrong‘ word and I would be down at the depths again so that I think there needs to be more aid for those families too.“
Could football do more to help?
„The problem when you finish early is that you’re a commodity. As much as you might be valued by them when you’re done, when you are playing for them you are done. You can not help them anymore. I am able to understand that. It is a company. But whenever you are dealing with human beings there is a bit more to it than this. You can’t treat people like commodities.
„Times have changed. The comprehension is so far better than it was and rightly so. Since you are not mentally perfect the manner soccer sees it, even if you aren’t emotionally strong then you will be immediately discarded by a manager. They will only say how they could help and his mind is not appropriate without thinking about the reasons for it to perform.
„I do think the PFA has to do more. Here is the largest game on the planet but I think rugby and cricket are way ahead in addressing these issues. A lot of the time in football it is only lip service. Folks say what other people wish to listen and don’t return to it“
Life stays tough for Eadie. Eighteen months ago he lost his mother to a brain haemorrhage that was surprising. But the favorable for him is that he’s discovering a means. He’s in a location that is better. „There are always things to deal with in life but general daily life doesn’t look so bad anymore,“ he states.
„You understand when you are going through a bad period. The good thing is before you know there is an ending to it, that when you’ve been through the event. The issue is whenever you are currently going through it first time, you are going down and down, and you believe there is no end to it. That is when, regrettably, people take their own lives.
„If you’ve got an episode and get through it, that is when you discover they become shorter, you can deal and you develop methods to deal with it. I would recommend anyone who has such sort of thoughts to see someone as soon as possible and endures those items. The longer you jar it up, the longer you wait patiently to see a doctor, the more challenging it is going to be.“
Eadie is now enjoying his job running a football programme for an independent school – at Ipswich of all places – and can be involved in a different venture that is new that is exciting . This season , he helped launch a new YouTube series FC Kitchen appearing at soccer and meals in a way, intending to raise awareness of the advantages of ingesting a diet.
„When you have children yourself you tend to check out the bigger picture and attempt to be more responsible,“ he states. „So it is a tie-in in terms of veganism and eating less meat. I’ll probably eat meat but it is about providing an alternative and looking at how we could slow down our effects on Earth. We’re pitching vegans against cats .“
Eadie is having fun. Pleasingly, his participation in soccer is no more limited to his job at school either. He is watching football, after turning his back to the match. There is a while for Norwich TV.
„It is natural to drift back into someplace you had pleasant times,“ he adds. „I’m finding it more enjoyable watching football again now.“
